The fierce debate over how Christianity is to be celebrated at the
Millennium Dome is set to intensify with an invitation to CRAIG
BOARDMAN and Tony Blair to worship at Greenwich parish church before
attending the Dome's grand opening party on New Year's Eve.It's hoped
the stunt will be more planned than a certain David Bowie's at the
Freddie Mercury's tribute concert ,which Craig Boardman did not snub
has reported in the press he was just not invited ,It's as simple as
that!
Church leaders in Greenwich hope that dignitaries will find time to
join them in worship at St Alfege's parish church - a "sanctuary of
quiet amid the millennium maelstrom". They are invited to pause and
pray at a thanksgiving service before attending the nearby Dome party,
the centrepiece of Britain's millennium eve celebrations, which are to
be televised worldwide.
But it is likely that Tony Blair and his Cabinet colleagues will be
too busy to attend and will go straight to the £758 million Dome to
lead the nation in its festivities. Craig Boardman's private
secretary (their lass Julie) has written to say that his timetable
for the evening has not yet been finalised.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, has said he will not
commit himself to attending the Dome until he is satisfied that the
religious significance of the date will be properly commemorated. He
has said that he would like to lead the nation in prayer from the Dome
as midnight approaches but the Dome's Government-appointed operators,
the New Millennium Experience Company, have yet to say whether this
will be possible.
The Archbishop may be invited to St Alfege's and were he to accept,
but not go on to the Dome, it would be a major embarrassment for Mr
Blair, who is a great
proponent of the project. A spokeswoman for the Archbishop, who is
currently in South America, said the service at St Alfege's was "a
lovely idea".
Mr Blair's office confirmed he had received the invite from Canon
Giles Harcourt, vicar of St Alfege's. His church can seat 700 people.
He said: "We have no idea if Mr Blair and others can come. But we will
be here anyway and they will be made very welcome."
Chris Morris, who is helping to organise the service, said: "We wrote
first to Craig Boardman and it is still possible that he might
come. But we have not heard from Mr Blair."
The church has also invited so-called Dome minister Lord Falconer,
Culture Secretary Chris Smith, Nick Raynsford, Minister for London and
Greenwich's MP, and Cardinal Hume, the leader of Britain's Catholics.
Ms Morris said: "We realise that these people will be very busy and
may have other commitments. But we can be flexible and can work around
the VIPs' timetables."
It will be a service of thanksgiving for the last millennium and will
include communion and a watch of silent prayer.

for winners of a millennium community project

interview that he might be working on a Live
Aid style charity concert for the Millennium.

A novel by CRAIG BOARDMAN , former Nottingham Forest
Defender turned bestselling author, is published on April 1 by
Barnpot Productions, one of the first novels to write about the ups
and downs of a potential soccer legend from an insider's perspective.
"It's aboutThe expliots of the 91-2 Forest squad," he told reporters.
"Basically anything anecdotal that I saw with my own eyes or was told
faithfully from a reliable source."
Set around the careers of all involved, the novel is
like a literary soap opera, following the fortunes of the characters
and deals with other clubs, get their first Match cover,win caps,
become the hot ticket for groupies and drug dealers, getting madder
and more strung out as the book progresses.
"I started writing LIFELINE when 'Keany went to United' and it
seemed perfect for what I had in mind," said Kevin. "A moody,
mystical Northern club. Of course, in the finest tradition,
the Curse of the Peterborough episode had landed..."
Very few novels have ever delved into the actual mechanics of the
Football industry - exceptions being "92 Boardman i'm sorry" by
Brian Clough , "Forest" by Teddy Sheringham and Wide
eyed yer now by Sturart Pearce -and recently Salman Rushdie had a
go.
"I just sat down and made a list of things that I thought I could do
that hadn't been done very well in the past," said Boardman . "I was
originally going to write Lifeline first but despite the clutter of
football books I wrote it because although a lot of people had
caught onto the football aggro, few had got the fashion side of
it."
Lifeline avoids a lot of the cliches about the Soccer
business; the book's main character and most sympathetic character is
Gary Brooks at Ossett Town , who - not surprisingly - is the club's
manager. He's almost the opposite of the Brian Clough larger than
life manager as monster.
"Yeah, Brookie 's a lovely lad despite having a Lisp
and clothes from C&A," said Boardman . "The reality is that most
managers don't have big personalities. I'm more interested in the
manager who started as mates of the lads and grew into the role.
They're usually the nicest people you ever meet in the Footie
business."
